Interview with Dwight Smith, gearing expert

This week in our "GearUp with WENZEL" column, we introduce you to our outside gear expert, Dwight Smith, and his passion for the gear industry. He began his journey in the gear industry over 30 years ago! Today, he is the vice president of Nidec Machine Tool America.

INTERVIEW WITH DWIGHT SMITH FROM NIDEC MACHINE TOOL AMERICA.

1) How did you end up in the gear industry?

My background is in metrology and computers and I entered the gear industry over 30 years ago as a representative of M&M Precision, now Gleason Metrology Systems Corporation.

2) What do you enjoy most in the gear industry?

I work with great people, interesting technology and, of course, interlocking!

3) What is your current role at Nidec?

I take care of sales, marketing and project management, give gear seminars and act as a technical advisor for gear grinding.

‍

4) What are the current trends in the gear industry?

Hard finishing of gears is used for almost all applications in the automotive industry, including the grinding of internal gears for planetary gear sets. The application of gear peeling is steadily increasing.

5) What do you think is most needed in the gear industry right now? Where will the gears turn next?

Training and education are always needed. When new people enter this industry, we need to provide them with the training they need to succeed and grow.

GEARUP WITH THE GT SERIES

After the successful launch of our new GT series last year, WENZEL is looking forward to showing the market what we have to offer our customers. Visitors to this year's CONTROL show in Germany showed great interest in the GT 450 gear measuring machine. WENZEL will be at IMTS 2022 in Chicago, among other events, showcasing our SF 87, LH 108, XO 55 and the GT 450 at our booths and those of our partners.
